Group Focus

The skin is one of the largest organs of body, which makes it a great candidate for drug delivery. However, the skin possesses exceptional barrier properties hindering almost every attempt for transdermal or dermal passage of compounds. For this purpose, the Laboratory of dermal and transdermal drug delivery focuses on various ways for the enhancement of drug application via the skin. One such way is the development of various types of nanoparticulate formulations and testing their effect on the drug’s skin permeation behaviour. The next focus in put on the development, characterization and use of novel compounds acting as permeation or penetration enhancers for skin delivery. Another field of interest is to study skin barrier at the molecular level by various biophysical techniques. This also involves the skin pathophysiology and diseases related to impaired skin barrier (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, skin cancer, and others).

Research topics

  • Dermal and transdermal delivery of actives
  • Skin permeation enhancers and their modes of action
  • Dermal and transdermal nanoformulations and their effect on the skin
  • Nanoformulation processes
  • Skin barrier and its pathophysiology
  • Biophysics of stratum corneum lipid matrix

Welcome to the Vesely Research Group. We explore 2D materials and their application in heterogeneous catalysis. We characterize 2D materials based on germanium and silicon, use them as a support for metal nanoparticle and reveal relation between the 2D material structure/electronic properties and observed catalytic activity.

We apply concept of spectro-microscopy to get insight into this relation by measuring the the same spot on the catalyst using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, ideally under in-situ or operando conditions.

We use advanced image and data processing of naturally multimodal data to uncover the nature of the sturcture-activity relation.

Group focus

The group focuses on heterogeneous materials from two independent views:

  • First, we characterize heterogeneous materials (i.e., porous materials, composite materials, catalysts) and determine the 3D microstructure, followed by revealing the relations between the microstructure and mass transport properties such as permeability and diffusivity. These transport parameters are predicted from the 3D microstructure, and the prediction is validated using independent macroscopic measurements in Wicke-Kallenbach diffusion and quasi-stationary permeation cell.

  • Second, we focus on the preparation, characterization, and application of novel 2D materials as catalyst support for single metal atoms (Single‑atom Catalysis, SAC) and metal nanoparticles. We aim to reveal the relation between heterogeneous catalyst structure and catalytic activity using both independent ex-situ and in-situ/operando characterization methods.
